Slytherin Pride

Slytherin Pride

(Please note that links may contain spoilers if you haven’t read or watched the entire series)

Would you believe that I (Katie) was sorted into Slytherin house on Pottermore? All 4 members of our family got sorted when the site opened back in 2011 and I remember when mine came up as Slytherin, we all gasped. Literally, we actually gasped! Honestly, I was a little disappointed at first – I didn’t want to be a “bad guy”. My son reassured me that there are good Slytherins though and that according to JK Rowling, Merlin was actually a Slytherin as well. The Sorting Hat did tell Harry Potter that “Slytherin will help you on the way to greatness” – so that’s a good thing if used properly.

From Pottermore:

Slytherins are associated with cunning, ambition and a tendency to look after their own. Their Pottermore welcome letter describes Slytherin as the “coolest and edgiest house in the school.” Slytherin has produced its share of Dark witches and wizards, but unlike the other houses, members are not afraid to admit it as one of the Slytherin traits is ambition and greatness. Its students are often feared by the other houses, but most Slytherins are actually very kind (unless you happen to get on their bad side for some reason).

Many view Slytherin as an evil house. According to the welcome letter, this is not necessarily true. It is true that some Slytherins have achieved greatness through evil deeds, but there are just as many if not more who have done great, non-evil things to achieve greatness.

Slytherins are always striving to be the best, something they have in common with Ravenclaws. However, Slytherins will never leave their own to be the best.

It worked out incredibly well (even though we certainly didn’t plan it) that all 4 of us were sorted into 4 different houses. It’s so much fun to be able to represent each house and it has been great for times like the Harry Potter 5k race we did last year. Notice our house scarves? Love having all different ones!

I also feel pretty powerful when I snuggle up in my Slytherin blanket! lol!

Snape is definitely my favorite Slytherin.

I have to admit that I’m a little fascinated by Lucius Malfoy as well. Very interesting character and I like his actor in the movies.

There aren’t a lot of other notable Slytherins that are worth bragging about though. Some of the Slytherins in the Harry Potter series are redeemable, but others like Dolores Umbridge, Bellatrix Lestrange, and of course, YOU-KNOW-WHO are just pure evil.
